Mineral precipitation and hydrochemical evolution through evaporitic processes in soda brines (East African Rift Valley)

چکیده

Soda lakes of the East African Rift Valley are hyperalkaline, hypersaline extremely enriched in Na+, K+, Cl?, CO32?, HCO3?, and SiO2. In this paper, we investigate chemical evolution these production sediments by salt precipitation via evaporation. Water samples from tributary springs three (Magadi, Nasikie Engida Natron) have been experimentally studied in-situ X-ray diffraction during evaporation experiments to characterize sequence mineral precipitation. These data complemented ex-situ studies, analyses thermodynamic hydrochemical calculations producing detailed information on activity all solution species saturation state minerals potentially generated given composition. Major precipitating sodium carbonates/bicarbonates as well halite. The CO3/HCO3 ratio, controlled pH, is main factor defining Na?carbonates sequence: lake brines where > 1, trona precipitates first whereas hot springs, ? nahcolite instead trona, which forms later partial dissolution nahcolite. Precipitation possible only at lower pH values (pCO2 higher than ?2.7) explaining distribution current stratigraphic sequences. Later, evaporation, thermonatrite precipitates, normally same time halite, a very high (>11.2) after significant depletion HCO3? due soluble increases brine contributing hyperalkaline character lakes. Villiaumite, sylvite, alkaline earth carbonates, fluorapatite silica also predicted precipitate, but most them not observed experiments, either because small amount produced, kinetic effects delaying nucleation some phases, or biologically induced chemistry that considered our calculations. Even cases, composition corresponding ions allows for discussion their accumulation eventual phases. coupling geochemical modelling key understanding hydrogeochemical hydroclimatic conditions soda lakes, evaporite settings, oceans early Earth other extraterrestrial bodies.

The geochemistry of groundwater resources in the Jordan Valley: The impact of the Rift Valley brines

The chemical composition of groundwater in the Jordan Valley, along the section between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea, is investigated in order to evaluate the origin of the groundwater resources and, in particular, to elucidate the role of deep brines on the chemical composition of the regional groundwater resources in the Jordan Valley. Samples were collected from shallow groundwater in...

Evolution along the Great Rift Valley: phenotypic and genetic differentiation of East African white-eyes (Aves, Zosteropidae).

The moist and cool cloud forests of East Africa represent a network of isolated habitats that are separated by dry and warm lowland savannah, offering an opportunity to investigate how strikingly different selective regimes affect species diversification. Here, we used the passerine genus Zosterops (white-eyes) from this region as our model system. Species of the genus occur in contrasting dist...

Rift Valley Fever Outbreak with East-Central African Virus Lineage in Mauritania, 2003

In October 2003, 9 human cases of hemorrhagic fever were reported in 3 provinces of Mauritania, West Africa. Test results showed acute Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) infection, and a field investigation found recent circulation of RVFV with a prevalence rate of 25.5% (25/98) and 4 deaths among the 25 laboratory-confirmed case-patients. Immunoglobulin M against RVFV was found in 46% (25/54) of d...

Concentration of Rift Valley fever and Chikungunya viruses by precipitation.

Simple and efficient methods for concentrating Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus and chikungunya (CHIK) virus are described. Ammonium sulfate, potassium sulfate, or alcohol was used as a precipitating agent and the precipitate was resuspended to volumes suitable for further processing and purification. The methods permitted concentration of live RVF virus and CHIK virus about 100-fold with negligib...

East African Rift System - an Overview

The main characteristics of the East African Rift System are outlined from selected references. The difference between the Eastern Rift with high volcanicity on two domal uplifts as against the Western Rift of restricted volcanism, but sediment and lake filled grabens is pointed out. This is also evident from the earthquake activity: Large earthquakes occur in the Western Rift, whereas earthqua...
